Zartan used to be a Ninja Wolverine figure. Ninja Wolverine had proportions that proved troublesome as it didn't really work with Zartan so I had to extensively modify the shoulders and neck. I shortened the neck, and I ripped off the shoulders in order to dremel his torso narrower. Then I reattached the the shoulders higher upon the body. Then it was a matter of resculpting and adding his costume pieces with Epoxy putty and Apoxie sculpt. The hood came from a Fantastic Four movie Dr. Doom figure. I wanted to retain his neck articulation by utilizing the rubber material of the hood and not obstruct the movement. The hood ended up not being as form fitting as I'd like and had to sculpt the top piece of the hood with apoxie putty. But it still doesnt hinder the mobility of the neck.
I painted his armor and thigh pieces metallic blue hoping to be reminiscent of the light sensitive stickers from the original 80's toy. I also wanted to recreate the clear plastic on his chest and thighs. So I cut out some clear plastic packaging and layed it over the chest and thigh pieces, then used a hairdryer to make the clear plastic mold over the contours of the sculpted armor. That coupled with the paint underneath made a pretty nifty effect that I didn't expect.
The mask he's holding comes from one of the most disturbing accessories to an action figure. The Senator Kelly accessory that came with Jean Grey from the first X-men movie figures. I sliced him up good an cut out his face with scissors and then cut out his eyes and mouth. Because the face of Senator Kelly's already looks distorted and stretched, it really doesn't fit over Zartan's face. I just wish I still had that movie Mystique figure that came with that rubber Hugh Jackman mask...
